I'm on my travels again, and I've hardly had time to do my own online courses. However, during a stop in the UK, I had a conversation with another of my former students who is returning to America this year. He has had a very successful career as an engineer, but his children have all left home, and his wife has her own career. He wants to consider changing his career and has started to look at the possibility of going into teaching.
I encouraged him to look at the alternative ways of pursuing teaching as a second career. He can go to college full-time, gaining his education degree and becoming licensed to teach in his state. It's possible that as he has a baccalaureate degree, he will be able to study a shorter program. Or he can study online, working as an engineer on a full-time or part-time basis, and studying at home through the Internet.
Whatever he decides, I'm absolutely sure he'll make a really good teacher, and with the shortage of math and science teachers, he's sure to get a job easily.
