Anecdotal evidence

I was interested to receive a comment from Chilena about whether the impetus for online learning came from employers and companies, or employees. I looked to see if I could find any research on this area, and to date I haven't been able to find any statistical evidence, although I will continue to look for some - could be interesting and the basis for some further comment.

However, there does seem to be anecdotal evidence that online learning can be good for both employers and employees, and the request for this kind of program can come from either side. Certainly there seems to be an increasing business to design, write and offer online commercial training at the behest of industry. Large companies are investing in tailormade products; the automotive industry uses online skills training as an integral part of it's apprenticeship schemes, and sees online programs as being suitable for a number of areas where outcomes can be established online.

Anecdotally it appears that employees will request online training because it allows them to update skills and to acquire qualifications without the disruption to their daily routine that attending courses outside their workplace will give. However, I will research this area more fully over the next few weeks and bring some facts and figures to light.

I think it would make sense for employers to request online learning, because it's a good way to give their employees training without losing them for a while, or having to rehire and retrain others.

Do you think that remote training and web conferencing will get to be more prevalent in the workplace? If the Internet is being used as a training or sales tool more and more, do you think that that would build the authority of online degrees more?

I think that the authority of online degrees will be built up the more people earn them, just because they will be more common. More universities will start offering them, making them higher-quality, which add to their authority. More and more things are being done online (like shopping), and I don't know online degrees would go the other way and cease to exist.
