Online research degrees

I want to think about choosing a new online course to study. Actually I really need to update my qualifications, and as I am working in an academic post - although not a teaching or research post - I am considering taking a doctorate. I can do this by stages. I can register for a Master of Philosophy degree, and then when I have studied to a certain stage, I can convert this to a doctorate and get my PhD. This would be quite attractive to me as it would allow me to scope out a dissertation and do some of the primary research, and then I can really work out just what would be effective for my doctorate.

The great thing about this is that I can do most of it online. There is very little taught content in a research degree, and apart from an occasional visit, I could do most of the communication electronically.

My subject area would be in the management of technology, but I really need to work out what I can do that will work with my present job. This could be difficult, because I don't want to start this process and then find that I can't make it work. I think I'll go and talk to one of the local universities and see if they have anyone who is doing something similar so that I can see what the issues are. I'll keep you informed.
