Mixed Methods

I’ve been working with an educational establishment that is setting up an online learning unit. They are taking a rather broad approach to this unit, as they think that distance learning is becoming more integrated into the thinking of educationalists. They are keen to use online learning in many different ways, including as part of “mixed delivery” training for industry.

Commercial and industrial training has been changed considerably by the advent of e-learning, with some 15% of commercial training being delivered by electronic distance learning methods, according to research conducted by the Learning Consultancy. However, for some training e-learning has limitations, and increasingly technology such as video-conferencing and web-casting are playing a part in electronic distance learning. Courses use the technologies that are most suited to the particular activities they offer, giving a better and more complete learning experience to the client.

This mixed approach means that there is more technology necessary for the commercial participants, but in many cases it also means that trainees can learn in their work environment, completing practical sessions by distance methods, and combining training with everyday real examples. The learning of new skills becomes that much faster and more thorough, making employers more satisfied and employees more adept at their jobs.
