Online College Course ForumThursday, November 17, 2005Learning Technology
My online unit in my institution has decided to consider a fusion of delivering programs online and holding "classes" using video conferencing techniques. At the moment most of the classes are at centers where video conferencing equipment is available for use, and they have had some good reports and feedback from students who have used this instead of attending block classes on campus.
The next move is to use web-casting for the classes, allowing better quality conferencing to happen and also allowing students to participate from their homes or work places. New technologies are really impacting on education and on learning methods, and online programs are in the forefront of this advancement. So make sure you talk to your college about what they are going to be using for the delivery of their online courses in the near future. Wednesday, November 16, 2005Healthy Online Students
Online programs are good for your health, according to one survey carried out in the UK. This was from a group of higher education establishments that commissioned a survey from Educational Wisdom, a specialist consultancy.
Apparently the reduction in stress of studying at home or in a familiar environment, plus the lack of commuting means that students can study for longer hours, have a longer attention span and are subject to less low level infections. So, if you want to be sure that you are in the best of health after you have gained your degree, consider studying online - it's good for your health. Sunday, November 13, 2005Online Doctorates
Having wittered on for ages earlier this year about a couple of online programs that I was to study, and then having further decided to do something more, it looks like I've gotten hoist with my own petard. I'm going to have to do a doctorate of some kind - and online.
Actually, studying for a doctorate lends itself to online delivery. A doctorate (or at least a PhD) is a research degree, so there is little teaching content after the first semester. You need to find an academic supervisor who is a "name" in a field associated with what you want to research; you will get guidance and support from your supervisor, much of which is deliverable online. So, all I have to do is find myself a university or institute that will register me for my PhD, and who employs someone in my subject area. Could take some time..... Archives
