My distance learning unit in the Polytechnic where I work is putting some new courses online. We are taking some of the full-time and part-time programs that we deliver in traditional fashion - in the classroom, into a learning management system so we can deliver them online.
We plan to enrol students in the normal fashion, and then give them the option to take each course as they wish. They have a set time to complete the course, and the assessments are different for the online courses so that there is no chance of copying.
I'm going to be very interested to see what the take-up of these courses are, and how the mix is perceived by our students. I suspect that they will plan carefully so that they have a mix of traditional and online courses each semester, allowing them to keep discipline on a daily basis, but free themselves up for work and other activities in their own time.
