Do you ever wonder why we have this drive to better ourselves? Of course, for many people the answer would be to gain more money, and this is a primary motive. But money by itself is nothing, the important thing is what we can do with it. After a certain level, there are limited things we need. Food, shelter and interests are usually catered for at a good standard in this country, and there are only so many times you can change the furniture and gain satisfaction from it.

My opinion is that we actually seek approval. More money can be interpreted as more approval; certainly people see money as a measure of the value that they are held in by their employer. One major way of upping the approval ratings is to better your qualifications; this usually helps you to better your performance at work as well. Online programs, in particular online degrees are an excellent way of doing this without disrupting your life. Look into it now.

Online degrees teach you more than the knowledge you are signing up to gain. They are great at teaching you how to think, and where to find things out. You cannot possibly remember all the information you are given on a program, and indeed you're not expected to. But you are expected to be able to find things out when you need to know about them

Similarly, developing new ways of thinking is crucial to being able to problem solve at a high level. You need to be able to analyze a situation to work out where the problems are going to occur and what their nature is likely to be. You then need to be able to think of new and effective solutions; often outside the frame to get the best possible solutions. Studying encourages you to develop these thought processes, and online programs are particularly good at this as you have to do things for yourself.

When you are selecting the online degree you want to study, one of the factors you have to consider is which institution you are going to study at. You will take many different factors about institutions into consideration, but one factor that tends to get forgotten is how much the institution can help you to build up your business network that will be so useful to you in your later career.

Your business network starts with your fellow students and the staff that are involved with your program. You will probably make more contacts through research and project work that you pursue during your study period. And of course most colleges have active alumni organisations that can be most helpful, particularly when you are looking for that all important first job after you qualifiy. All together, the network contacts that you make during your study can be one of the most long-term helpful parts of your study.

At the moment I'm recruiting some new staff, and as I was going through the initial applications, I started thinking about what filters I use to help me choose the employees I think are going to be best for the vacancy I need to fill.

The very first filter I use is qualifications. I need to know whether the person is going to be intellectually capable of doing the job, and qualifications give me some indication of the standard that the person can achieve. No relevant qualifications, no interview.

So if you want to create a career for yourself, the first thing you have to do is to make sure that you are well qualified. Studying for an online degree opens gates that could otherwise be shut for you - and allows you to get to the all important job interviews.
